This workshop is an exploration of the basic principles of Afro-Cuban folkloric and popular dance as they are taught formally in Cuba, and as they are shared person to person throughout the island. Material in this class is a foundation for approaching the incredible diversity of African based dances in Cuba, from Orisha dance, to Rumba, to Timba, and an opportunity for dancers of any style - modern and ballet included - to explore the unique movement experience of Afro-Cuban. We will take our time to approach each dance with the intention of finding more space, freedom, and depth in the basic movements. With patience and repetition, students are guided to experience the grace and artistry of Afro-Cuban dance.
