What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes and shoes/sneakers for exercise and movement are best. Dance shoes not required.
Do I need to sign up with a partner?
I am an absolute beginner. Am I going to be okay in the Beginner Workshop?
Yes. The beginner workshop is for you.
I am an experienced dancer in another style. Will the Beginner Workshop be too slow?
Not usually. The fundamentals of any style are an important place to start.
What is the atmosphere of your classes?
Classes are relaxed, fun, focused, and challenging. I intend for you to learn the form well and have a lot of fun in the process. Students represent the full range of ages, backgrounds, and experiences. All are welcome.
I don't really know much about Salsa or dance in general. I'm looking for a new way to exercise. Is this class for me?
Yes. Dance is a very complete system of exercising mind, body, and spirit. Salsa happens to be a very fun form of dance with rich cultural, social, and joyful elements. Newcomers always welcome.
How is Cuban-style Salsa different from other styles of Salsa?
Some of the distinctions include...the structure of the turn patterns in Cuban-style are generally circular as opposed to linear. Cuban-style is a “walking” style, where ease and flow are emphasized over tension and abrupt changes. Cuban-style can be danced on “1”, “2” or “3,” but is typically taught on the “1” (the first count of a measure of music). Students will eventually develop the skill and knowledge to relate to the music in any of the three timings. Most importantly, students will learn to respond to the groove of each individual song.
Can I dance Cuban-style at a "regular" Salsa club?
Yes. You will learn more about the various regional distinctions (there is salsa all over the world!) as you move through the course. There are clubs in New York and around the world that cater to dancers of specific Salsa styles, and some that accommodate dancers of a wide variety of Latin styles (Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cumbia, etc.) and if you're lucky, some that play an even broader mix.
What is your refund policy?
I can offer a full refund up to seven days in advance of the first class; 50% refund within seven days of the first class; no refund after the first class of the workshop.
What is your policy for make-up classes?
At this time I am not able to offer make-up classes.
Do you accept drop-ins?
Yes. I accept drop-ins in the four-week cycles, advanced beginner level and above. I occasionally permit drop-ins in the beginner workshop for returning or experienced students. All of the workshops are cumulative, so commitment to the full series is always best for you and the group.
